Demystifying Permanent Makeup

Explore Courses

My clients often get confused about the different terminology used to describe the different methods used in permanent makeup, my industry. You’ll have heard words such as Hyper Realism Brows, Tattoo eyebrows, Hairstrokes Eyebrows, Ombre Eyebrows, Combination Eyebrows and Microblading.

They are ALL forms of tattooing. Any process that involves pigments being implanted into the dermis is tattooing regardless of the tool or method used.

Hyper Realism and Hairstroke Brows

Hyper Realism and Hairstroke Brows implant tiny hairstrokes that replicate that of a natural eyebrow. When the art creation is in the right hands, these brows will look ultra realistic and natural. It is created using a digital device designed for fine facial work. I call it the ‘undone look.’ One where the client feels the huge benefit from the enhancement or restoration, but it will not be obvious to anyone else that the work has been done.

Microblading

Microblading can give the effect of the above, but is limited to certain skin types and ages. Due to its evasive result of cutting the skin mature clients are not good candidates. Also, thos with oily skin will not retain the pigment well when this technique is used. When the same effect can be created using a digital device, leaving the skin intact, this is most clients and artists preference if they are trained in both fields.

Combination Brows

Combination Brows are created in the same way as a Hairstroke or Hyper Realism Brow. With Gorgeous texture. Only in the instance and overlay of a soft powdery effect is added for another dimension, and sometimes a little more umph if that is required. It is all about the control of the amount of pigment implanted.

Ombre Powder Brows

Ombre Powder Brows are created using a digital device. The pigment is shaded through the brow area. Creating a beautiful powder effect. This effect can be as soft or as dense as required. It’s all about the amount of pigment implanted. It is the go to for those with an oily skin type as it offers more longevity. Also for those with an amount of hair, who are looking for a more groomed and defined look.

Whatever method or style you go for, just ensure your artist is experienced. Examine not only their fresh work but plenty of their HEALED work! Fresh work is essentially an injury to the skin, in which a load of pigment is attached to. When the enhancement heals, this injury comes away and is the proof of how effective and consistent your artist is at what they do. If your artist is not displaying or cannot show you plenty of HEALED work, then you should be wondering why.
